CAPI (Computer-Assisted Personal Interviewing) is a face-to-face interview using a tablet: the respondent answers questions, and the interviewer immediately records the answers on the tablet. It is a modern classic in sociology. It is about reliability and confidentiality.

The Rating Group has its own proprietary software: the EPOLL© system. This is a software complex for sociological research, which includes a program for surveys based on the Android operating system and server software for rapid information processing, preliminary data analysis, data collection quality control, and automatic data set generation.

EPOLL supports:

  • All possible types of questions: closed, open, combined, and any other questions that can be decoded.

  • Functions for random rotation of alternatives, question filtering, programming of logical transitions, and mutually exclusive alternatives.

Rating Group uses 500 modern tablets with EPOLL, which are proportionally distributed across all regions of Ukraine. The tablets are constantly connected to the Internet (3G or 2G). After the survey is successfully completed, the results are automatically sent to our server and a data set is created. If the Internet connection in the area is weak, the survey is still conducted using a tablet with EPOLL software. As soon as the interviewers enter an area with better Internet coverage, the data from the tablet is sent to the Rating Group server.

Sample

There are two typical types of CAPI sampling: general representative and quota.

General representative sampling

This is a random stratified multilevel sample. A “random route” protocol is used to select a settlement. Respondents are selected at random in the selected settlements. The interviewer then compiles a list of all family members who are eligible to vote (over 18 years of age), and the respondent is selected on the basis of the “next birthday” principle.

Quota sampling

This is also a representative random stratified multilevel sample. However, in this case, respondent categories can be selected according to specific quotas. This is necessary, for example, when it is necessary to compare several social categories in more detail or to study a specific category in greater depth.

Quality assurance

Rating Group conducts logical checks of the data set and monitors audio interviews both online and in recordings. We have developed a comprehensive system for monitoring and improving the effectiveness of our interviewers. It includes regular assessments using quality charts and training to improve their skills and qualifications. In particular, the following measures are provided:

01.
EPOLL software on a tablet allows you to record interviews, track interviewers' routes, and monitor their performance.
02.
Interviewers undergo thorough training before conducting the survey.
03.
Supervisors are instructed on how to control the quality of interviews.

They can listen to audio recordings from tablets, view metadata about the interviewer's work, record aspects that need potential improvement or attention from Rating Group, and provide practical recommendations to interviewers.

04.
To validate the research data, the Rating Group uses procedures to control the quality of respondents' answers using correlation analysis.

The first procedure involves constructing a “response quality” scale, which monitors the time taken by the respondent to complete the questionnaire and the variability of their responses in order to avoid skimming through the questionnaire and adding a question to the questionnaire to test attentiveness.

The second procedure involves checking for statistically significant correlations between data from different survey waves.
