CAWI

CAWI (Computer-Assisted Web Interviewing) is a survey in which respondents receive an online questionnaire and fill it out themselves.
Format
CAWI surveys are conducted on the Rating Online online survey platform (developed in-house). The open source software Lime Survey (LimeSurvey GmbH, Hamburg, Germany) is used to program questionnaires and collect data. This software is constantly updated and improved in collaboration with specialists from Germany, Latvia, and Norway.
The survey design is user-oriented and has an optimized mobile version for convenient completion on smartphones. The system supports a wide range of question types and scales: for example, matrix questions, semantic differentials, open-ended questions with standardized numerical input, and questions with images and videos.
Sampling
Rating Group online surveys do not use panel sampling. Instead, random sampling and various invitation distribution channels are used to ensure maximum audience coverage.
The target audience for surveys conducted through our online platform is the population of Ukraine aged 18 and older who use smartphones and have access to the Internet at the time of the survey. More than 80% of the adult population of Ukraine falls under these conditions.
To ensure the representativeness of the sample in online surveys, we use a method of preliminary calls to invite participants to take part in the survey. This process involves generating Ukrainian numbers (as described earlier in the CATI section) and sending out invitations to participate in the online survey.
Quality control
For CAWI surveys, the quality control procedure consists of creating a “response quality” scale. Each element of this scale is rated as 0 or 1 point, which is assigned to each respondent depending on the selected criteria.
Data is excluded from the analysis if the sum of the points received exceeds the set threshold. The exclusion threshold is selected individually for each data set depending on the descriptive statistics analysis performed after the scale is created to avoid excluding a number of cases that could compromise further analysis.
As an additional measure, an analysis of basic descriptive statistics and correlations is performed on both the raw and cleaned files to verify the quality of the data quality assurance procedures.
Elements included in the “response quality scale” include:
The time required for the respondent to complete the questionnaire.
Variation in responses to check for linearity.
Correct answers to tricky questions to verify the respondent's participation in the survey.
Control functions are also used to ensure the quality and integrity of online-collected data, including measures to prevent participants from participating in the survey multiple times.
The platform's technical capabilities also include the ability to track the source from which the respondent accessed the survey. Once data processing is complete, a thorough and detailed analysis is performed. This multifaceted assessment includes both logical and technical checks to ensure the integrity, accuracy, and overall quality of the data obtained.
Logical checks involve analyzing the data for consistency, coherence, and compliance with predefined criteria. Technical checks cover verifying data formats, identifying and resolving any anomalies or discrepancies, and ensuring that the data complies with defined standards.
