Citizens believe that Ukraine should take a neutral position in the Georgian-Russian conflict

  • Ukrainians do not support the actions of either side in the military conflict in Georgia.
  • About 20% of respondents support the actions of Russia, and almost the same share support the actions of Georgia.
  • People are equally unlikely to believe either that Georgia launched military actions to defend its territorial integrity or that Russia became involved in the conflict to protect the residents of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

Methodology

  • Fieldwork dates: 19–27 August 2008.
  • Sample size: 2,021.
  • Age: 18+.
  • Regions: Volyn, Zakarpattia, Ivano-Frankivsk, Lviv, Rivne, Ternopil, Chernivtsi (West); Vinnytsia, Kirovohrad, Poltava, Khmelnytskyi, Cherkasy (Center); Kyiv city, Kyiv Oblast, Zhytomyr, Sumy, Chernihiv (North); AR Crimea, Odesa, Kherson, Mykolaiv (South); Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia, Kharkiv (East); Donetsk and Luhansk (Donbas).
  • Margin of error: up to 3.3%.
